Les Grecs ont ils cru a leurs mythes? Essai sur l'imagination constituante review â 103 Mment on ecrit l'histoire; and he declares that its aim was to provoke reflection on the way our conception of truth is. The essay is as a whole is an answer to the uestion posed by the title the long answer the short answer is given in the last paragraph of the book In the process of answering the uestion Veyne has to engage in an intense thought provoking at times convoluted at times draining philosophical exercise This sort of exercise is not new to Veyne He has done similar sort of things in his other philosophical books and essays His philosophical exercise is closely connected with his role as a historian and it focuses on epistemological uestions which are raised by any project of writing a history The essay mainly addresses the uestion of Truth and its nature There are two sides to this There is a notion of truth which he rejects Let s call it the absolutist conception of truth His argument for it is mainly Kantian and he doesn t spend too much time defending it The rest of the essay is a protracted attempt to develop a historically sensitive FoucauldianHeideggerianNietzschean Kantian conception of truth which allows for a multiplicity of truths and multiplicity of criteria of truth In this Veyne makes considerable headway but many threads are left underdeveloped and many uestions unanswered which is to be expected In other words it s an ongoing project The best way to read this book is use it as a tool which provides us illuminating suggestions and pointers and employ them to do our own thinking on the subject This little book is littered with thought provoking gems of ideasThe only constant truth lies in its claim to truth and this claim is only a formal one p 88

Les Grecs ont ils cru a leurs mythes? Essai sur l'imagination constituante review â 103 St An Essay on the Constitutive ImaginationVeyne's present book has some kinship with his sprightly theoretical work Co. What a fascinating uestion you think to yourself It s a slim book so I was expecting a delightful set of maybe somewhat loose reflections on the nature of belief and the uses of mythhistory bolstered by some close readings of a variety of sources But no Instead you get a rambling monologue supported with no evidence whatsoever It s the kind of work that people call suggestive and describe as brilliant even though it has no discernible argument It drives me nuts That said it does almost in spite of itself have some interesting thoughts There is a lovely though somewhat incoherent metaphor of history as polygon with events filling up the space inside it for instance Veyne circles around some interesting uestions about history myth and ideas of truth and sometimes the specific ways he frames juxtaposes these uestions is indeed interesting even if his plan for answering them is just to kinda think about them So in that sense it s not a total loss though I still didn t find it a particularly useful text to think through
