Robert E Lees Orderly summary Ö eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF      A descendant of Nathan Bedford Forrest's slaves Al Arnold tells his journey of embracing his Confederate heritage His ancestor Turner Hall Jr a Black Confederate served as a body servant for two Confederate soldiers and an orderly for Gen Robert E Lee Turner Hall Jr was celebrated by Blacks and Whites in his co. This book was one of those serendipitous acuisitions that occurred in the context of attending a local book store hosting the sale of a friend s newly published book As fate would have it I had been conversing with a friend of mine in the bookstore and the subject of Traveller General Robert E Lee s horse came up I happened to look across the floor during the conversation and spotted this book and its author Al Arnold at a different table Well at that point I couldn t ignore how fate sometimes works so I went over and chatted with Al I must admit that having an open conversation about slavery and the Confederacy with an African American man was a bit unexpected particularly during a highly polarized election season not to mention a popular cultural context that is dismissive of southern history So that is the backdrop of how I came to purchase and read this illuminating book Mr Arnold is a pure historian who is able to look at historical fact as it was without demanding its revision its denial or its destruction His personal angst at coming to terms with having had an ancestor the author s great great grandfather Turner Hall Jr that served apparently proudly in the Confederate army plus having been owned by none other than Nathan Bedford Forrest evoked a deeply sympathetic response in this reader Apart from the fascinating and meticulously documented history of his ancestor Mr Arnold offers a voice of reconciliation and understanding that speaks passionately and honestly to those who may find themselves on opposite sides of racial history and current political division Rather that attempting to nurture a sense of guilt or obligation from descendants of white families who fought for the confederacy Mr Arnold takes his cue from his ancestor and shares in the ancestral pride related to his relative s service in the CSA A major thrust of this book is Mr Arnold as a young man coming of age as a professional and his unflinching ability to speak honestly about his observations and experiences in the African American community both good and bad and unapologetically call out hypocrisy where he sees it His viewpoint is one of a man who is able to view his place in the context of history and lay claim to being a descendent of the Confederacy and extract from that history a proud heritage without defending its cause nor reuiring an apology from descendants of those who did I found this book to offer a model of an evolving racial dialogue that we here in the south have been engaging in for some time informed by the religious and historical heritage of our ancestors that helps us all appreciate our uniue place in our culture Bravo Mr Arnold
