Soyna Owleys crafts a compelling tale of dark adventure and magic She begins the tale with a set of twin boys and sets the tale on the mystical island of Durjipore She calls one of the boys Floyd and the other Farook separated in their peculiarly similar identity by the one inauspicious blue eye of Floyd It becomes the source of Floyd s embarrassment and anguish little expecting that it eventually becomes the reason for him turning out as Yaksha the protagonist who will save the Durjipore The island where the boys live with their Parsi father and their superstitious mother is plagued with a problem both urgent and grave While the island had been slowly sinking over time it has now witnessed the kidnapping of about a hundred children in uick successions Where and why is a burning mystery his father the Police Chief of the city must solve Except it becomes the calling of the thirteen year old Floyd The adventure start with a chilling prophecy that one of the brothers will go missing As the petrified mother worries herself sick about the safety of her unlucky son unfortunately it s the other who is carried away in a case of mistaken identity The misfortune begins during the ten day festivity of Hobson Jobson To Durjipore s native islanders the annual festival is a time for much awaited revelry with fire eaters and dancers and drummers and fortune tellers and a general exchange of joy and sweetmeats but to its other obscure inhabitants it means much For Ressuldars and the Merrows who are not exactly human it marks the time when magic comes alive And so step in the mysterious flying dogs plants that talk waterfall with faces and some evil and menacing underwater beings Amidst all this blurring of reality and magic is the desperate young Floyd on uest for his brotherWould the unlucky Floyd be able rescue Farook Would he be able to save the hundred other children Save his vulnerable island from drowning As the pages keep turning uickly the pursuit keeps expanding Probably there a learning much bigger Find out as you read Soyna Owley s debut novel which is as much a book for imaginative young minds as it is for anyone who loves a richly crafted world of fantasy Or a passionate piece of evocative writing Some uotes Stars glimmered in the dark purple sky like pinheads in a velvet pincushion Soft sunlight sputtered through the bubbled glass of the porthole churning the creamy walls of the cabin into buttery gold She shows great artistry in the manner she blends cultures as Durjipore which has both Anglo Indian influences from its previous masters Such blending is always a precarious task for any writer but I found myself amused at the description of the mother who listens to fortune tellers wears sarees and bakes mince pies and rose biscuits Or when the children play a game of Othello Or when for food there is mangosteen coconut cashew fudge grilled leeks and pineapple wrapped in mango blossoms dipped in sauces of tamarind and thimbleberry and hibiscus wine And the other uirky little references from Italy America England or Far East In addition there is a fair sprinkling of Hindi words and references between her remarkably well written English bringing forth a voice of genuityMy favourite character in the book however would have to be the Ressuldars with their twirling and their curling and their sprouting and their darting Also their blushing If I have piued your curiosity enough I shall refrain from divulging any further because I would love you to enjoy the book as much as I did If I had to describe the book in the manner of her exuberant and inventive alliterations of Diddling Dahlias and Suffering Shiitakes and Tamarind Tuckers something that the characters keep exclaiming I would delightfully exclaim back as Charming Chipotle Or Lyrical Lobsters Maybe Fascinating Framboise I know I might be sounding bonkers but basically you get the idea The writing is Delectable Dewberries No Just delectable Flight Risk magic She begins the tale with a set of twin boys and sets the tale on the Arrow mystery his father the Police Chief of the city Liczby Charona mistaken identity The The Psmith Omnibus Mike Psmith;
