I didn t touch any of the Theodicy included in the appendix so I can t speak on that The Monadology itself is a fine place to start on the ladder up to Kant because it wasn t written by a philosopher and therefore he didn t want to waste everyone s time Other than the archaic usage of certain terms which had to be cleared up later in the guide for me I grasped pretty much what was being said Monads are the basis for everything and they come in three flavors with God s being the OG and most powerful But that doesn t mean the lesser monads are lacking because while they are powerful in their own way they are just imperfect enough to not be God monads because there can only be one of those naturally Leibniz goes on to clarify that there are soul and body monads and based on rules established earlier they can t directly change or influence each other but rather simultaneously co exist leading to Leibniz s theory of harmony It s this perfectly organized and arranged order of monads that prove that God is perfect good and decisive But that s basically the gist Other interesting topics are discussed like Leibniz Mill theory which argues against the mechanical properties of perception and also the infinite meta and micro worlds existing above and below our perceptions Yeah pretty straightforward onto the next one

I just received this book in the mail a couple of days ago and I ve already read through it Strickland s running commentary surpasses Rescher s in clarity and in content among other commentaries of the Monadology I felt that I followed the arguments adeuately through almost the entirety of re reading the Monadology via Strickland though there were a few sections I felt needed to be expanded upon This is an extremely valuable resource especially for students who are first reading Leibniz I ve always cringed at the idea of teaching the Monadology since there is so much content in so few words and for first time readers of Leibniz most of it will seem drastically obscure and long winded Very clear and penetrative commentaries like this help alleviate my worries I ve lost count of how many times I ve read the Monadology but this was the clearest time reading through it
