Actual rating 45 starsSwendson s alternate reality to this steampunk 19th century story was brilliant and cleverly done As someone who just loves history this was something I was excited to read from the get go and Swendson did not disappoint she gave me everything I expected and a lot I was uite amazed by how she seamlessly inserted magic to this historical fiction novel She hit it in all the right places magic affected social class mobility technology and even the course that history took in the past century or soThe main character Verity Newton was a very likeable character she was shy but feisty bookish but outspoken strict and temperate but also passionate and empathetic As a sort of coming of age story for Verity I thought this book really set it up nicely Verity has come to the big city away from her father who wants her out of his sight for spoilery reasons after the loss of her mother and she is looking to restart to begin again but instead what she finds is that she s thrown into this massive movement of ideas and people a revolution that is sweeping up a storm and helping her find the real person she is inside by battling the pressures of society and fighting for something of meaningI love that the book opens with this scene of Verity sitting in the train travelling to New York her nose in a book when her train gets robbed by masked bandits It gave an exciting uality to the start and I loved that it created a parallel to the end which I won t describe for spoilery reasonsThe supporting characters the infamous rebels who wear gears with red ribbons on their lapels are groups of engineering college students reporters and journalists and basically anyone in the lower or middle classes who does not possess magic I love that magic has become this dividing force in the book it s not viewed as bad or evil but valued at a price higher than a person which causes negative feelings amongst those who cannot wield it Theses rebels do not agree with the magister class and want to see a rise in the non magical people through the use of technology and steam engines as a replacement for magic s convenienceAnother aspect I appreciated was the fact that some of these magisters didn t actually know how to use their magic properly in its derivative form instead they relied on magically powered machines to do the work for them I thought it really gave an insight on people in general or today s society how eventually even when we have power people enjoy convenience and are prone to depending on other things rather than putting in the effort themselves We re a lazy bunch and I think this book hit that notion on the nailThe rebels were a colourful bunch of people literally and their inner circle whom Verity befriends were very interesting characters themselves including Colin Nat Lizzie and the oh so dreamy Alec Each of them had different but charming and passionate personalities that fit their cause I have to say although I thought Verity and Alec were cute I wasn t rooting for them From the beginning I was hoping that her mysterious and strange employer Lord Henry would be the one for her I think I really started to enjoy the book even in the last half of the book when she became closer with Lord Henry but not really that close and started drifting away from the rebels so that she could find out what she thought of this cause rather than whatever they decided to tell herWhile a lot of the big ideas of this novel were uniue and interesting it did have uite a few obvious reveals and tropes However it was a very light and fun read and while I think it could have used some heavier scenes and graver crises it was a great start to a series and I look forward to reading the next installments Yureka, tome 10 ruled the colonies but now an underground society of mechanics and engineers are developing non magical sources of power via steam engines that they hope will help them gain freedom from British Monster Box rule The family Verity works for is magister but it seems like the children's young gu. free read Þ eBook or Kindle ePUB ´ Shanna Swendson Shanna Swendson ´ 3 download read & download Rebel Mechanics Ardian uncle is sympathetic to the rebel cause As Verity falls for a charming rebel inventor and agrees to become a spy she also becomes and enmeshed in the magister family’s life She soon realizes she’s uniuely positioned to advance the cause but to do so she’ll have to reveal her own dangerous secret. This was a clever alternative reality having to do with magic I loved Verity and her feistiness She knows what is expected of her position but it doesn t stop her from doing the things she thinks are right The kids are adorable and Lord Henry was uite fun There are a few of the rebels who were also fun characters The description of the magic and the machines was easy to follow and I didn t feel overwhelmed at the history portion of the book Even the ending was satisfying All in all a uick read with a uniue premise Huge thanks to Macmillan for sending me the arc

This and other reviews on my blog My Friends Are FictionMy Thoughts I went into Rebel Mechanics with a bit of trepidation I haven t had the best luck with steampunk books so I was thinking this would fall into the same traps I was so surprised with how enjoyable I found this story to be I enjoyed that the book combined an alternate history with steampunk This combination made for a really enticing readI was immediately absorbed into the world and main character Verity The pacing was fast and the steam punk aspects were a good amount of the story but it didn t drive the writing I find that a lot of times it feels like a story was created to feature the steampunk machines but for this book it seemed like an aside to the story line I really loved thatThe society in Rebel Mechanics was broken into classes the Magisters and then the folks with no magical ability Of course there was division and hatred between the groups and really this drove the story I found this not to be an entirely uniue concept but it worked incredibly well and really magic happiness for Kristen Swendson really captured a revolutionary atmosphere and it gave the book a historical feel though it was an alternate realityMy favorite character hands down was Lord Henry He reminded me a bit of the 10th Doctor which I adored I couldn t help but see him as David Tennant Not a bad thing at alltumblrmpuiccNdUX1spm3w2o1500 Lord Henry was such a fun character and I d be happy reading a story solely about him His interactions with Verity were perfect and so cute The other characters like the children Verity is governance for are well rounded and incredibly likeable The rebels were understandable in their motives even if I didn t always love the way they approached their causeAs for the story in this one it was fun and not too heavy It was a tad easy to predict and I saw the twists playing out before the reveals but honestly that didn t detract from the story for me I just found this book to be so engaging and really refreshingFinal Thoughts I really loved Rebel Mechanics I thought it was such an entertaining read that kept me glued from start to finish I m completely sold on these characters and can t wait for there had better be a seuel
